UPDATE From Ronald Andreassend. Director of The Arts Menagerie
We sold the Chan Andreassend Art Studio where many activities of The Arts Menagerie were based and moved out on the 31st March
We haven`t started to look for a new location yet, its a very exciting opportunity to develop new premises more suitable for our future directions for Chan Andreassend and The Arts Menagerie. In the meantime we are still doing projects which can be seen on Facebook

What a year! The Arts Menagerie is barely 10 months old and its been a whirlwind of creative energy with scarcely time to relax between projects. In that short time we pushed the boundaries, explored things outside our comfort zones and got noticed by the Art World and the wider community. Taking simple ideas and discovering what they can achieve is one of the best qualities of the creative industries and TAM did it extremely well.
From the start it was always going to be different, no fees, no funding, no fixed agenda and no structure but somehow it all came together. From photo shoots and exhibitions to workshops and videos, along with thousands of photos still to be processed!
Janina`s idea for our first photo shoot pushed most of us way past anything that we had done before. Dressing up in costume is simply not what serious creatives do! While it raised eyebrows with many, it made a statement that we exist and that we don`t need validation or permission to be creatives. Plus of course we ended up with stunning photos and now we have started to get the attention of other creative industries, art show organisers, council members, community and charity groups as well as individuals with some very good connections.
It's because of what we do, how we go about it, who our members are and why we started in the first place, while in the pursuit of excellence and opening opportunities for all.
I cannot think of any other arts based initiative in New Zealand which has ever had such ambitious ideals with an open door policy for multi creative disciplines and we are all a part of it.
The first event was the French circus steampunk photo shoot and our last for the year was The Prison Fellowship Children's Christmas Party. Both seemingly poles apart but there is a direct connection between them as the French circus photo shoot became the catalyst for creating the magic for children who have extremely hard lives with parents in prison.
We provided photographers, backdrops, decorations, face painting and craft materials and wore costumes and the children accepted us for who we were.
It surprised the Fellowship, volunteers, guardians, ourselves and most of all the children whose smiles said we got it right.
We have many photos and several videos still to be edited but planning for next year is underway so send in your ideas and lets find a way of doing them!
2013 can be viewed as an incubation for ideas and 2014 a time for when we start to grow.
Thanks to everyone who helped and participated in all the events!
